silence

what does quiet sound like? have you ever really listened? it doesn't sound like nothing.

maybe wind.

or tiny waves

or a cylinder of air.

a rolling ring.

a heartbeat.

a pulse of matter.

what is silence really? a hush that falls? a cotton in the ears? a distance from the things that sound? for there is still sound. still wars and screams and bombs exploding. still trains and cars and busses running. still voices and music and chatter bustling. nothing has stopped, so there is no real silence.

then what is this lack of sound i hear?

it is myself removed.

removed so that the waves that reach my ears are mine and no one else's.

silence is a distant chorus left behind
